    • Essay Workshop- I will meet with each of you, but also complete the following steps before finalizing your essay:
      • CHECK THESIS
        • Highlight it.
        • Have you named the attitudes Hamlet has in sol. #1 and sol. #2? Circle them.
        • Have you identified the devices you discuss in the paper to explain how the attitudes are established or how they shift?
      • CHECK BODY
        • Examine each body paragraph to see how it related to the thesis. 
        • Underline words and phrases that relate to the specific ideas in the thesis.
        • Are there any sections in the body paragraphs that are NOT about the thesis? (Probably have to take it out.)
      • CHECK QUOTES
        • Where are you using quotations from the soliloquies?
        • Does each quotation have explanation, commentary, and connection to the topic of the paragraph and thesis?
      • CHECK CONCLUSION
        • Highlight spots in the conclusion that reflect the intro.
        • Is there a statement in the conclusion that generalizes the thesis ideas overall?
  • Due Sat. 2/15/20 by 11:59 pm: Final draft of Act I attitude shift / soliloquy essay. Also bring your two written drafts to class on Tues. 2/18/20.

      • Bring an interpretive-level question with you to the conference.
      • Keep in mind that your grade depends on how well you discuss the book. 
    • Today's Assignment: Shakespeare Background Crowdsourcing
      • Definition of crowdsourcing: The practice of obtaining information or input into a task or project by enlisting the services of a large number of people.
      • Use the sites you found for homework to add accurate information for each section on the document above. Everyone will be working on the document at the same time, so make sure you do not duplicate info.
      • 3 accurate entries = 70              4-6 accurate entries = 80-90 7-10 accurate entries= 90-100
    • HW: Begin studying Act I Vocabulary
      • Go to Vocabulary.com and create an account using your school Google. Make sure you have joined my class called "AP Eng 4"
      • You will see that there is a word list assigned for Act I. You will have a quiz soon on these 40 words, so you will need to study them. Here's how:
        • Get a word list from the sub or use the online doc.
        • In the Act I assignment on vocabulary.com, cycle through the words from the list by making a guess about the meaning of each word. When the answer comes up, write the definition on your word list. Just get the synonym or a short definition for each.  
        • Begin studying your word list thoroughly because you will run into these words as soon as we start working with Hamlet next week.

      • Sign up for conferences. Remember to bring an interpretive-level question for discussion. Also keep in mind that your goal in the conference is to convince me that you have read, understood, and analyzed the text well.
      • In-class writing assignment: Describe the main conflict in your chosen novel. How is this conflict resolved? Are you satisfied with the resolution of the conflict or not? Explain.
    • Hamlet
      • Books given out (see me for one if you were absent)
      • Activity: Hamlet Theatrical Poster Analysis- To start thinking about the ideas and actions presented in the drama, analyze these 11 posters from Hamlet productions. Describe each poster and make notes about the emotions, colors, images, symbols in the artworks.
      • HW due Fri. 1/10/20: 
        • 1. Answer the four questions below about today's theatrical poster activity. Bring your answers to class for discussion/to turn in.
          • A. What do many of the theatrical posters have in common?
          • B. What do you think each similarity signifies?
          • C. Which poster seems most provocative to you? Explain why.
          • D. Write three questions this activity makes you want to answer while reading the drama Hamlet.
        • 2. Locate at least five excellent, reliable sources of information on Shakespeare's life and the Elizabethan Era. Come to class with the URLs of valid resources on a Google doc.
